The Honourable Fitzgerald Jeffrey, Minister of State in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education delivered the feature address at the launch of Cycle 22 of the Retraining Programme at the Plaza de Montrose, Chaguanas on Wednesday March 17, 2010. In his speech, he commended the training providers, life skills facilitators and internal verifiers for their contribution to the success of previous cycles and advised them to challenge the new trainees to strive for excellence. He also revealed that the programme will be implementing a new debit card system to pay trainees their regular stipend.

This new system will increase the efficiency with which trainee stipends are disbursed and trainees will be able to access their stipends via any automatic teller machine (ATM) or point-of-sale merchant. The electronic process will also significantly reduce the administrative, human resource and material costs associated with the printing and distribution of cheques. Cycle 21, based in Tobago, will be the first to benefit from this initiative as early as this Friday, March 12, 2010.

The Retraining Programme offers training in basic vocational skills to nationals of Trinidad and Tobago between the ages of 25-45 who are preparing to enter or re-enter the job market. The programme was reformulated in the year 2000. Its overall goal is to develop a cadre of potential workers trained to industry standards and adaptable to changing industry needs.
